Drummer Wesley “Wes” Watkins has carved his place in the musical landscape of the Washington, D.C. area by playing for R&B, Gospel, Rock, Jazz, Neo Soul, HipHop, Blues and legendary Go-Go bands. Born in Baltimore and raised in Severn Md. Watkins, current Drummer and Musical Director for Grammy Nominated artist Carolyn Malachi, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Walker Redds Project, David Correy, and ‘Got My Own Sound, was inspired by watching and imitating the aweinspiring dexterity of his father’s drum style. He recalls tossing his drumsticks in the air and watching drum videos as a kid, perfecting his performance as well as his sound. By age 7, Watkins was noticed by
Richard Smallwood and asked to play for his Gospel choir and music workshops. At this time, Watkins realized music was his passion and what he wanted to spend his life pursuing.
Watkins was heavily influenced by Go-Go– a style of music established in Washington, D.C., heavy in percussion where the drummer drives the beat with the conga player. At 9, the enterprising young drummer organized his first band at school creating his own experience. He began performing locally and gigging with the area’s top acts and sharing the stage with bands such as Faycez You Know, Lissen Band, Sugar Bear (Experience Unlimited, 1988’s Da Butt), Northeast Groovers, and Backyard Band with founding member, HBO’s The Wire star Anwan Glover In October of 2013 Watkins did his first International Drum Clinic in Amsterdam at the Drumland Music Store, with over 100 people in attendance to watch him take to the stage to perform, speak, and field questions.
Drummer Wesley Watkins formed a band called Got My Own Sound. The band consist of Branden Jacobs (keys), Jerel Abraham(bass, vocals), Elliot Jefferson(aux keys, vocals), Keith Hammond(guitar) and Larry Dennis(percussion). Combining the sounds of hip hop, jazz, blues, rock and neo soul the bands innovative style will change the way you approach the music. February 12, 2016 Wes Watkins released his first album titled Got My Own Sound which featured the band and made it to #7 on the itunes chart. The band will be releasing a new album titled “Welcome To Our World” in the summer of 2017. There will be features from local and national artist such as Hip Hop artist Cane, David James, Chris Scholar and others.
Wes has had the pleasure of working with many artists in the Washington, D.C. area. Greats like Carolyn Malachi, Recording Jazz artist Marcus Johnson, Frank Sirius, Reginald Payne, Ebony Jackson, Andrae Alexander, Temika Moore, Ten Commandments, Project 71, Lissen Band, Familiar Faces, and Faycez You Know. He has toured Internationally with Carolyn Malachi to Haiti and with the Fabulous Thunderbirds to Europe and an East Coast tour.
Watkins has been invited to record studio work with artist such as Duanne Manns Watkins on studio production for The Experience (2007,) Andrea’s World (2007,) That’s Enough by Temika Moore (2010,) The End of Me EP by Temika Moore (2012,) and i5 Anthem (2013.), Clarence Spady Blues record(2015), Carolyn Malachi(2015), The Fabulous Thunderbirds (2015).
Wes Watkins released his first album titled Got My Own Sound in February of 2016. The single titled Sky, featuring Carolyn Malachi, was produced and arranged by Watkins along with the help of Branden Jacobs and written by Carolyn Malachi.
